用本仪器作为水泥胶砂干缩试验或测量膨胀率、自应力值时，均需采用两端装有球形顶头的标准试件以及相应的成型养护方法。

仪器应在无振动环境中，在橡皮垫上平稳安放，试验室的室温应控制在17-25℃为佳，每次试验安放试件前，应将试件两端的顶头表面擦净，同时用稍湿棉纱细团擦净仪器的上、下支承面（指下支承孔及触头孔）以免沙粒落入，影响测量精度，然后校对百分表的零点（可用手指轻击表面玻璃定表针位置）。读数时可将试件稍移动，使试件顶头与仪器的上、下支承面正确接触，测量应精确至0.01毫米或0.001毫米。如指针出现摆动时，可取摆动范围的平均读数，

仪器如长期不用，则应在擦净表面后，在非镀面上一层薄机油并用塑料薄膜盖罩，以防锈蚀。
